[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] On the 5th, the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced that on the 7th, it will hold the Digital Nations Steering Committee meeting online, gathering director-level Chief Information Officers (CIOs) from 10 leading digital countries including Estonia, Denmark, and the United Kingdom.

The leading digital countries include South Korea, the United Kingdom, Estonia, Denmark, Canada, Israel, New Zealand, Uruguay, Portugal, and Mexico. Digital Nations was established in 2014, led by South Korea and the United Kingdom, as an international consultative body to discuss successful digitalization strategies in the public sector and to present the future of digital government to the international community. Each year, the chair country holds a ministerial meeting, and the next chair country hosts the steering committee meeting. South Korea was nominated as the chair country for 2022 at the 2020 ministerial meeting and will host the steering committee meeting in 2021.

At this meeting, the achievements of past activities will be reviewed and the latest trends in digital government by country will be shared to finalize the agenda for the ministerial meeting to be held in the United Kingdom in November. Digital Nations currently operates joint research groups in four areas: digital ID, artificial intelligence, data, and sustainable ICT. This meeting will serve as an interim review of the research group outcomes to be presented at this year’s ministerial meeting.

South Korea will introduce the recently announced "e-Government Basic Plan 2025" and share the progress of intelligent government projects such as the National Secretary and Public MyData.

In particular, based on seven years of accumulated discussions and research among member countries since its founding in 2014, this meeting will finalize candidate joint projects for Digital Nations aimed at producing tangible results such as multinational pilot services on international issues like artificial intelligence and digital identity verification. The finalized candidates will be submitted as agenda items at this year’s ministerial meeting, and projects adopted will be actively pursued starting next year when South Korea assumes the chairmanship.

Jung Seon-yong, Director General of the Digital Government Bureau, stated, “South Korea is recognized globally as a digital government powerhouse, having ranked first in the OECD digital government evaluation last year,” and added, “Through Digital Nations consultative activities, we will take the lead in international discussions on digital government and use this as an opportunity to further enhance the brand value of South Korea’s digital government.”
