LG Invests 100 Billion KRW in Kakao Mobility for Joint Exploration of New Businesses (Update)
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Group is exploring new business opportunities through a 100 billion KRW equity investment in Kakao Mobility.
LG Corporation announced on the 2nd that it has decided to make a 100 billion KRW equity investment in mobility platform service company Kakao Mobility.
LG stated, "From the perspective of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) management, we decided on this investment to explore new business opportunities in future mobility sectors for LG affiliates, such as securing battery driving data from LG Energy Solution, battery swapping, and LG Electronics' electric vehicle charging solutions through cooperation with Kakao Mobility," adding, "We considered the potential synergy effects."
LG Energy Solution is strengthening its capabilities in the 'BaaS (Battery as a Service)' business, which manages and diagnoses the lifecycle of electric vehicle batteries from manufacturing to utilization and reuse. LG Electronics introduced a pilot service for an integrated charging station management solution at the end of last year, which includes electric vehicle charging status monitoring, remote control, and diagnostics.
LG and Kakao Mobility plan to regularly discuss cooperation measures to develop a strategic partnership. They intend to jointly discover new business opportunities by combining LG's battery and automotive electronics capabilities with Kakao Mobility's platform strengths.
An LG official said, "Through this investment, we plan to enhance our understanding of customer touchpoints in the mobility platform business and create synergy through cooperative relationships."
