The Special Act on the Investigation of the Truth and Restoration of Honor of the Victims of the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident (hereinafter referred to as the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act) passed the National Assembly plenary session, beginning the healing of the pain of bereaved families after 73 years.
On the 29th, the National Assembly held a plenary session and put the 'Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act' on the agenda, passing it with 225 votes in favor, 1 against, and 5 abstentions out of 231 members present.
The enactment of the 'Yeosu-Suncheon Incident Special Act' is a remarkable achievement after 73 years, made possible by the solidarity and harmony between ruling and opposition parties, marking the first step toward the true investigation of the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident and the restoration of honor.
Mayor Heo Seok of Suncheon said, “It took 73 years to enact the special law for the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident. Starting today, I hope that the dignity and honor of the bereaved families who suffered from the Yeosu-Suncheon Incident will be restored, and that healing and consolation for the bereaved families will continue.” He added, “With the special law passing the National Assembly plenary session through solidarity and harmony, Suncheon City will also take the lead in investigating the historical truth of the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident through solidarity and harmony with Jeollanam-do and neighboring cities and counties.”

This special law focuses on the investigation of the truth and restoration of honor for the bereaved families related to the Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident. To this end, it establishes the 'Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Committee,' chaired by the Minister of the Interior and Safety, and includes provisions for forming the 'Yeosu-Suncheon October 19 Incident Truth Investigation and Victims' Honor Restoration Working Committee' under the Governor of Jeollanam-do to implement the resolutions of the committee and handle delegated matters.
