[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Heung-soon] LG Welfare Foundation announced on the 29th that it will award the 'LG Hero Award' to five individuals: Kwon Hyun-woo (28) and Lee Hyun-sun (38), who saved a driver from being seriously injured after being run over by a car reversing in the middle of a bank parking lot and road; and Yeo Seung-su (37), Cheon Young-chang (42), and Choi Yong-ik (30), who jumped into water to rescue a driver who lost consciousness in a submerged vehicle.
Kwon Hyun-woo, who works at a bank in Suwon, Gyeonggi Province, witnessed on the morning of April 23 around 9 a.m. a car owner who fell to the ground after being pushed about 10 meters backward by a vehicle reversing with the brake released in the customer parking lot. When the car owner was in danger of being run over by the vehicle, Kwon did not hesitate and rushed to push him quickly to the side of the vehicle.
Thanks to his quick response, the driver only suffered minor injuries, but Kwon was unable to avoid the vehicle and his hand was caught under the wheel, resulting in severe injuries including severed wrist nerves and broken bones. He was diagnosed at the hospital that he may have permanent disabilities. Nevertheless, he said, "I am relieved that the customer visiting the bank was not seriously injured," and added, "Even if I were to go back to that moment, I would help in the same way."
Lee Hyun-sun witnessed on March 21 around 1 p.m. on a road in Toegyewon, Namyangju, Gyeonggi Province, a driver falling out of a vehicle that was reversing after colliding with a car that ran a red light. Seeing the driver in danger of being trapped between the wheels under the vehicle, Lee immediately got out of the car, ran across the intersection, and quickly climbed onto the vehicle. She then pulled the handbrake to stop the car, and the driver escaped sideways with only minor injuries. Lee said, "I think it was the first time in my life that I sprinted with the mindset that saving a person comes first."
Yeo Seung-su, Cheon Young-chang, and Choi Yong-ik witnessed on May 9 around 3 p.m. on a road next to Sihwa Lake in Ansan, Gyeonggi Province, an accident where a sports utility vehicle (SUV) crashed into the car ahead and plunged into the water. The vehicle slowly submerged, but the driver lost consciousness from the impact and could not get out.
Although the three did not know each other, upon hearing that the driver was trapped inside the car, they did not hesitate and jumped into the water together. They swam to the vehicle, climbed onto it, and held onto the driver through the sunroof space on top of the vehicle to prevent him from submerging, enduring for a long time until rescuers arrived.
An LG official stated, "We are awarding the LG Hero Award to encourage the courageous actions of ordinary citizens who risked their lives to save precious lives at a critical accident scene."

Meanwhile, the LG Hero Award was established in 2015 reflecting the late Chairman Koo Bon-moo's intention that "the company repays social responsibility to heroes who sacrificed themselves for the nation and social justice." After Koo Kwang-mo became chairman of LG Group in 2018, the scope of recipients was expanded to include ordinary citizens who serve and perform good deeds for neighbors and society in various places. So far, a total of 152 people have received the LG Hero Award.
