"AI Interprets Animal X-rays" SKT-Chungnam National University Develop Veterinary Imaging Diagnostic Support Solution
[Asia Economy Reporter Seulgina Cho] SK Telecom and Chungnam National University have embarked on developing a solution that enables artificial intelligence (AI) to interpret X-rays of animals to assist veterinarians in diagnosis.
On the 28th, SK Telecom announced that it signed an MOU for the development of an AI-based veterinary imaging diagnostic assistance solution with the College of Veterinary Medicine at Chungnam National University, a leading institution in the domestic animal imaging diagnosis field.
Chungnam National University plans to de-identify tens of thousands of imaging big data held at its affiliated animal hospital of the College of Veterinary Medicine and provide SK Telecom with diagnostic opinions attached by veterinarians specializing in veterinary imaging diagnosis. SK Telecom will develop an AI-based imaging diagnostic assistance solution for animals by training on the imaging diagnostic data provided by Chungnam National University using its AI automation platform, ‘MetaRunner.’
The AI-based veterinary imaging diagnostic assistance solution is expected to help veterinarians in single-person animal hospitals or newly appointed veterinarians quickly interpret images and make diagnoses, thereby raising the level of animal medical care. Recently, while the demand for animal imaging diagnosis has been continuously increasing due to the rise in companion animals, there is a shortage of veterinarians specializing in radiology who must interpret animal images and make rapid decisions.
Additionally, SK Telecom plans to implement a system through its 5G MEC technology and proprietary cloud platform, enabling veterinarians to receive AI-provided imaging diagnostic interpretation results anytime and anywhere.
Lee Haebeom, Director of the Affiliated Animal Hospital at Chungnam National University College of Veterinary Medicine, said, “With the development of AI-based medical analysis technology in the veterinary field, faster and more accurate diagnoses will be possible,” adding, “We expect to provide high-quality treatment services to companion animals.”
Lee Jongmin, Tech Innovation Company Head at SK Telecom, stated, “Based on SK Telecom’s accumulated AI automation platform, AI semiconductors, cloud, MEC, and other vision AI integrated technologies, we will provide innovative veterinary diagnostic services.” Ha Minyong, Innovation Suite Head at SK Telecom, said, “Through collaboration with Chungnam National University College of Veterinary Medicine, we will develop AI diagnostic assistance solutions to improve the accuracy of veterinary diagnoses and strive to provide better veterinary medical services for the enhancement of animal welfare.”
