Gwangju Seo-gu Yudeok-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee Delivers Ice Packs to Disability Welfare Center
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Shin Dong-ho] The Yudeok-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee (Chairman Park Saeng-man) in Seo-gu, Gwangju Metropolitan City, delivered about 700 ice packs they directly collected on the 21st to the Seo-gu Disabled Welfare Center (Director Lee Dae-man).
With the recent increase in single-person households and dual-income families, as well as the rise in internet shopping due to COVID-19, the use of ice packs has surged. As ice packs have become difficult to dispose of at home and have become environmental pollutants, the Residents' Autonomy Committee began collecting them.
The collected ice packs are delivered to the Seo-gu Disabled Welfare Center, where they are sorted and cleaned before being provided to places in need of ice packs, such as Yangdong Traditional Market.
Ice packs, classified as general waste, are not easily combustible and take more than 500 years to decompose naturally. They are a type of microplastic (superabsorbent polymer) that causes water and soil pollution.
According to Statistics Korea, it is estimated that 260 million ice packs were produced last year, of which about 80% were disposed of as general waste, about 15% were discarded into drains, and only about 5% were reused.
The Yudeok-dong Residents' Autonomy Committee was selected for the ‘Climate Crisis Response Green Environment Creation Project’ among the ‘Good Village Creation Contest led by residents of Seo-gu, Gwangju this year,’ and is promoting ice pack collection projects and zero waste campaigns.
