Gwangju City Opens Yeongsangang River 'Crossing Bridge' Dedicated to Bicycles and Pedestrians
Construction of a Dedicated Bridge Near Eodeung Bridge in Gwangsan-gu
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Gwangju Metropolitan City announced on the 17th that it has opened a dedicated bridge (tentatively named Eodeunggyo) near Eodeung Bridge in Unnam-dong, Gwangsan-gu, where bicycles and pedestrians can cross.
Citizens using the existing Yeongsangang Riverside bike path have experienced inconvenience as they had to take a long detour to Geungnakgyo to cross the river.
Geungnakgyo has a high vehicle traffic speed and poor conditions for bicycle use and pedestrian environment due to road surface damage, and the narrow width of the pedestrian area posed a high risk of accidents between pedestrians and bicycles.
Accordingly, Gwangju City invested a total project cost of about 6.8 billion KRW to expand bicycle infrastructure, enhance user convenience, and promote the use of bicycles as a green transportation mode. Construction of the bridge began in January 2019 and was completed last May.
With this opening, the problem of having to take a long detour when crossing the Yeongsangang River has been resolved, and accessibility for bicycle use between Gwangsan-gu and Seo-gu has improved, which is expected to help increase bicycle usage rates.
