Gwangyang City, Mini Watermelons Popular in Seomjingang Jaecheop Information Village
High-Quality Mini Watermelons Grown with Clear Water from Seomjin River Popular Among Single-Person and Small Households
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Gwangyang City in Jeonnam announced that since early June, two types of mini watermelons produced in the Seomjingang Jaecheop Information Village have gained competitiveness and are selling very well.
The watermelons, grown with the clean water of the Seomjingang River, fertile soil, and excellent cultivation techniques, have a sugar content of over 12 Brix and contain vitamin A and a large amount of water, making them a local specialty effective for diuretic action, fatigue relief, and reducing swelling.
Produced in the Gwangyang area since 2016, they have received favorable reviews in large supermarkets in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gwangju, and their preference is increasing as they fit the consumption trends of single-person and small households.
The types of mini watermelons currently on sale are Boksu watermelon (peeled Boksu watermelon) and Black watermelon (mini black-skinned watermelon).
The Boksu watermelon is rugby ball-shaped with a clear rind and soft skin, making it convenient to peel and eat or to make watermelon punch or juice. The Black watermelon, released in July, has a thick and firm rind, excellent mobility, and chewy flesh with added sweetness, making it very popular.
The prices are 14,900 KRW per box (3.5~4 kg) for Boksu watermelon and 18,900 KRW per box (5~6 kg) for Black watermelon. They can be purchased on the Gwangyang Seomjingang Jaecheop Information Village website and affiliated shopping malls, and will be featured in July on KBS's good consumption entertainment program "Raenseon Jangteo".
A representative of Seomjingang Jaecheop Information Village said, “We hope many people enjoy these premium mini watermelons grown in a clean natural environment with excellent techniques and purify their body and mind.”
Lee Joo-ok, head of the Information and Communication Division, said, “We will increase sales of mini watermelons suited to the non-face-to-face small household consumption trend to raise farmers' income and do our best in quality control and promotion.”
