Samsung Engineering Expands Greenhouse Gas Reduction Facilities at Cheonan Plant
[Asia Economy Reporter Suyeon Woo] Samsung Engineering is taking steps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions at the Cheonan Environmental Energy Plant site.
Samsung Engineering announced on the 15th that it will expand nitrogen oxide (NOx) reduction facilities at the Cheonan Environmental Energy Plant site operated by the company. This facility expansion was carried out to comply with the standards set by the 'Special Act on Improvement of Air Quality in Air Management Zones,' enacted last year.
Since Samsung Engineering has been managing the site with standards much stricter than legal requirements, it plans to proactively respond and manage the strengthened standards. The company plans to complete the installation of the facilities by the end of June and expects full operation to be possible from July after performance testing is completed.

It consists of Unit 1, which can process 190 tons of municipal waste and 130 tons of food waste water, and Unit 2, which can process 200 tons of municipal waste and 50 tons of food waste water. Samsung Engineering constructed both Unit 1, completed in 2001, and Unit 2, completed in 2015, and is also responsible for the scheduled operation projects until 2022 and 2030, respectively.
The Cheonan incinerator is leading efforts to reduce greenhouse gases and reuse resources using eco-friendly technology. Through eco-friendly technology that reacts ammonia contained in food waste water with nitrogen oxides generated during waste incineration, greenhouse gas emissions are reduced. Additionally, steam obtained during the incineration heat cooling process is supplied to nearby industrial complexes and surrounding cultural and sports facilities, achieving the effect of producing eco-friendly resources.
Samsung Engineering plans to actively target the overseas green infrastructure market based on its technology and experience. The green infrastructure market, centered on incinerators and water treatment plants, is continuously increasing in demand according to global environmental trends. In particular, O&M (operation and maintenance) linked projects are characterized by the ability to generate stable profits over a long period. Samsung Engineering plans to actively respond to the increase in environmental facilities, focusing on countries in Southeast Asia and the Middle East where it has prior experience in chemical plant projects.
