Women's Groups: "8,000 Petitions for Severe Punishment of Jo Joo-bin... Disappointing Verdict"
[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] Women's organizations expressed regret over the reduced sentence for Jo Joo-bin, the operator of the Telegram 'Baksa Bang', who was prosecuted for producing and distributing sexually exploitative videos, in the appellate court.
The 'Telegram Sexual Exploitation Response Joint Countermeasure Committee' (hereafter, the Joint Committee) held a press conference in front of the Seoul High Court immediately after Jo's second trial sentencing, stating, "More than 8,000 citizens signed a petition urging severe punishment in the appellate court," and added, "We want a more advanced ruling and more certain punishment so that digital sexual violence is not taken lightly." The Joint Committee also pointed out, "The police obtained information on 15,000 users of the 'n-beonbang' and investigated about 1,000 people," emphasizing, "The perpetrators are not monsters but someone next to us, and the main operators including Jo Joo-bin represent them."

The Joint Committee was established in February last year as a coalition of women's organizations after the controversy arose over the fact that sexually exploitative videos were distributed through Telegram. Representatives of the Joint Committee observed Jo's trial in court that day. Earlier, the Seoul High Court Criminal Division 9 (Chief Judge Kwangseop Moon) overturned the first trial's sentence of a total of 45 years imprisonment for Jo, who was twice prosecuted for violating the Child and Youth Sexual Protection Act (production and distribution of obscene materials, etc.), organizing a criminal group, and concealing criminal proceeds, and sentenced him to 42 years imprisonment.
