Overloaded Ship Sinks in Nigeria... 156 Missing
[Asia Economy Reporter Kim Suhwan] On the 26th (local time), a boat passing through the Niger River in northwestern Nigeria capsized, leaving about 150 passengers missing, AFP reported.
According to the report, the vessel, carrying 180 people?exceeding its capacity?sank in the middle of the river.
Authorities stated, "So far, 20 people have been rescued, and 4 deaths have been confirmed," adding, "The remaining 156 are still missing and are presumed to be underwater."
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari expressed his condolences to the bereaved families, calling the accident "deeply shocking."
AFP noted that this accident is expected to be recorded as the deadliest among recent capsizing incidents.
In Nigeria, boat capsizing accidents often occur due to overcrowding, bad weather, and poor vessel management. Earlier this month, a boat carrying about 30 people capsized in Niger State.
