50-Year-Old Sentenced to Prison for Stabbing Citizen Who Tried to Stop Urinating in Supermarket Trash Can
Attempted Murder Charge Confirmed...Victim, Former Chef, Suffers Loss of Taste and Trauma
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A man in his 50s who was charged with wielding a weapon against a citizen who tried to stop him from urinating in a trash can inside a mart was sentenced to prison in the first trial.
The Criminal Division 13 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Chief Judge Lee Sang-joo) announced on the 25th that it sentenced Mr. A, who was detained and indicted on charges of attempted murder, to 8 years in prison.
Mr. A was charged with stabbing the victim multiple times in the face and neck with a weapon he carried after the victim, who witnessed him urinating near a trash can by the packaging counter inside a mart in Geumcheon-gu, Seoul, last January, pointed out, "You should not do that."
The victim fled the scene, reported to the police, and was transported to a hospital. Fortunately, there was no life-threatening injury, but the victim sustained severe wounds on various parts of the face.
Mr. A's side admitted to the act but claimed there was no intent to kill. However, the court recognized Mr. A's implied intent to kill and acknowledged the charge of attempted murder.
The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant attempted to kill the victim, who justifiably protested against urinating in a public place, in a brutal manner," and "considering that he committed another crime despite having a prior record of assault and that no restoration of the damage caused has been made at all."
The court pointed out, "The face and neck are areas with many blood vessels," and noted that anyone can reasonably foresee that stabbing or cutting these areas with a weapon could result in death.
