Naju-si Operates 'Local Food Taste Education' for Kindergartens and Daycare Centers
[Naju=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Han-hyuk Lee] Naju City, Jeollanam-do (Mayor Kang In-gyu) announced on the 25th that it will operate the ‘2021 First Half Local Food Taste Education’ for children in kindergartens and daycare centers in the area until the 22nd of next month.
This education focuses on improving children's preferences and familiarity with local foods to enhance awareness of traditional food culture and to improve dietary habits accustomed to fast food and preservative-added foods.
The program will be held 10 times each in the first and second halves of the year at the Local Food Experience Culture Center for 10 selected daycare centers (a total of 173 children) through prior recruitment.
The theme for the first half is ‘Traditional Foods and Kimchi Made with Naju Pears,’ and for the second half, ‘Traditional Fermented Sauces Using Local Foods.’ Six graduates of this year’s advanced course for future generation taste education instructors will be deployed as instructors.
The education is conducted in an experience-oriented manner focusing on taste, aroma, and cooking, allowing children to directly make and taste local foods to satisfy their five senses rather than simply delivering knowledge.
In particular, to prevent COVID-19, wearing masks is strongly encouraged, and separate taste experience kits will be produced and provided to homes and daycare centers.

Mayor Kang In-gyu said, “Through traditional food education tailored to children’s perspectives, I hope they feel the value and joy of local food and that it helps form proper eating habits at home. We will prepare various education programs for all generations to systematically preserve and pass on local foods, which are gradually being forgotten due to changes in dietary paradigms.”
