POSCO Signs Business Agreement with Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and Korea Healthy Family Support Center to Support Marriage Immigrant Women
Providing Employment Training for Marriage Migrant Women and Customized Career Counseling for Their Children
[Asia Economy Reporter Hwang Yoon-joo] On the 25th, POSCO will sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family and the Korea Healthy Family Promotion Agency to support the self-reliance capabilities of multicultural families, focusing on programs for marriage immigrant women and their children.
POSCO Chairman Choi Jeong-woo, Minister of Gender Equality and Family Jeong Young-ae, and Director Kim Geum-ok of the Korea Healthy Family Promotion Agency will jointly sign the MOU at the POSCO Center in Seoul. The agreement centers on supporting basic learning and IT education for marriage immigrant women, as well as career guidance and scholarship support for their children.
The support program, initiated last year through collaboration between POSCO and the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family, will be practically implemented by the Korea Healthy Family Promotion Agency, which oversees healthy family and multicultural family support centers nationwide, and will continue for the next three years.
This project reflects the needs of marriage immigrant women who have so far been limited to simple labor jobs but now hope for more stable and professional careers. It will focus on supporting the acquisition of academic qualifications necessary for employment, such as passing the qualification exam (GED) and computer skills education.
The support targets marriage immigrant women primarily in key POSCO Group business areas, including Gyeongsangbuk-do, Jeollanam-do, Gyeonggi-do, and Incheon City. In particular, those who pass the qualification exam and enter university will receive additional scholarship support.
Additionally, to help children of multicultural families grow into healthy members of society, the program will also support middle and high school students from multicultural families in choosing career paths that match their interests and talents.
Alongside this, about 20 university students registered in the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family’s Multicultural Outstanding Talent Data Base will be selected to receive scholarships aimed at developing their strengths, fostering excellent talents who can serve as role models for multicultural children.
This project is funded by the POSCO 1% Sharing Foundation, which operates through donations of a portion of POSCO Group employees’ salaries. Given that the number of multicultural family members in our society continues to grow to 1.06 million, the initiative is significant in supporting family members to settle and grow stably in society.
