Goheung-gun Expands Market for Fresh Garlic... Supporting Garlic Farmers to Overcome COVID-19 Crisis
Lotte Department Store, Costco, and Others Continue Supplying Garlic for Jangajji
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] Goheung-gun, Jeonnam (Governor Song Gwi-geun) announced on the 21st that it held a shipment ceremony for Goheung new garlic at Handong Market in Pungyang-myeon, attended by Governor Song Gwi-geun and Pungyang Nonghyup President Park Mi-hwa, and is making every effort to expand sales channels for garlic farmers struggling due to COVID-19.
Last year, garlic farmers faced a sharp price drop due to decreased agricultural product consumption and garlic overproduction caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, leading to the disposal of harvested garlic at production sites.
In response, the county took proactive measures to secure stable sales channels by producing and promoting a TV program timed with the new garlic shipment season. In cooperation with Daehyang Distribution Co., Ltd., it supplied fresh vegetables to Lotte Department Store and subsequently achieved the shipment of new garlic to Lotte Department Store and Costco.
The newly shipped garlic started with an initial shipment of 5 tons and will be shipped daily at 2.5 tons each to Lotte Department Store and Costco.
Goheung new garlic is among the earliest to be shipped nationwide among major garlic production areas and is highly rated for being mild and excellent for making garlic pickles.
Park Mi-hwa, President of Pungyang Nonghyup, said, “Although we face difficulties such as securing harvest labor due to COVID-19, we will do our best to supply high-quality Goheung garlic to consumers.”
