Dongdaemun-gu Shares PCs with Information-Vulnerable Groups for 10 Years... 100 Units Provided This Year
Providing 100 Love PCs for IT Hope Sharing to Information-Vulnerable Groups This Year... Repairing Outdated Administrative PCs and Replacing Consumables Like Keyboards and Mice with New Products
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) will provide 100 "Love PCs" to local residents throughout this year to bridge the digital divide for information-vulnerable groups.
Since 2011, the district has signed a business agreement with the nonprofit organization Korea IT Welfare Promotion Agency and has been repairing administrative PCs that have exceeded their service life, previously used at the district office and community centers, to provide them to information-disadvantaged groups for over 10 years.
The Korea IT Welfare Promotion Agency is a nonprofit social enterprise that collects donated PCs from public and private sectors, upgrades usable PCs, and distributes them to domestic disadvantaged groups, local children's centers, and developing countries abroad. PCs that are unusable are dismantled at resource recycling centers and recycled by component.
The recipients eligible for the Love PC program are persons with disabilities, recipients of basic livelihood security (near-poverty class), national merit recipients, single-parent families, marriage immigrants, and nonprofit social welfare facilities residing in Dongdaemun-gu. Applications can be made at community centers or welfare-related departments of the district office, and duplicate applications within two years are not allowed.
The district accepted the first round of Love PC applications until April 30, and after verifying eligibility, PCs will be distributed to applicant households in May.
Applications will also be accepted in August and November.
To support the Love PC distribution, the district allocates an annual budget to purchase new consumables such as keyboards, mice, speakers, mouse pads, and power strips, replacing these items along with the PC units.
