Jeonnam Provincial Gugak Orchestra Produces Music Video Commemorating the 41st Anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Movement
Even If the World Does Not Know You, Released on the 18th at 3 PM on YouTube and Naver TV Channels
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Chunsu] “Citizens! Please do not forget us.”
The Jeonnam Provincial Gugak Orchestra announced on the 17th that it will release the music video commemorating the 41st anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, titled "Even If the World Does Not Know You," on YouTube and Naver TV channels at 3 p.m. on the 18th.
This is the second May 18 Democratic Uprising commemorative work following last year's highly praised music video "Jeoma Jeoma Kongjeoma," and the second musical letter sent to the people of Myanmar after the previous release "Peace in Myanmar."
The Jeonnam Provincial Gugak Orchestra reconstructed the finale scene of the oratorio collective play "Spring Day," which was presented last year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the May 18 Democratic Uprising, capturing in the video the final desperate cries of the most ordinary people in this world and the tragic reasons why they had to remain at the provincial government building.
This video is especially meaningful as singer Kim Wonjoong, known for singing the pain of the era with the famous song "Bawiseom," participated with a solo performance.
In particular, the sound of the last phone call between a young citizen soldier who was ready to die to defend the provincial government building and his mother, and the voice of a woman crying out "Please do not forget us," blend densely with the melody of the haegeum playing the Scottish folk song "Mary Hamilton," creating a powerful climax and leaving a moving resonance in the video.
Ryu Hyungseon, artistic director of the Jeonnam Provincial Gugak Orchestra, said, “In May 1980, why did they have to risk their lives to stay at the provincial government building? The painful answer to this question is fully contained in the music video ‘Even If the World Does Not Know You.’ Through this video, I hope we can remember May 18 once again and deeply empathize with the severe wounds currently being experienced by the people of Myanmar.”
