Coast Guard Cheong to Promote Career Recruitment for Maritime and Fisheries High School Students in the Second Half of Next Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] The Korea Coast Guard announced on the 13th that starting from the second half of next year, it will recruit third-year students majoring in ship navigation and engineering at maritime and fisheries high schools as police officers.
Currently, there are 11 maritime and fisheries Meister and specialized high schools nationwide, and among them, about 800 specialized personnel majoring in ship navigation and engineering are produced annually from 9 schools.
The Coast Guard plans to early recruit outstanding talents with a high understanding of ships and the marine environment through career hiring. It is also expected to contribute not only to the development of Coast Guard duties but also to the cultivation of excellent talents in the maritime and fisheries sectors.
To this end, since March, the Coast Guard has been conducting business consultations with related organizations such as the Ministry of Personnel Management. On the 13th, a video conference was held with principals of maritime and fisheries schools to hear field opinions on student career planning and employment realities, and to discuss recruitment plans for Coast Guard officers.
Kim Sanghwan, principal of Incheon Maritime High School, said at the meeting, "The opening of recruitment for Coast Guard officers means the creation of quality jobs, which raises great expectations not only in the education sector but also among students," adding, "We will take an interest in nurturing outstanding talents suitable for the Coast Guard and support the students."
Yoon Sunghyun, Planning and Coordination Officer of the Korea Coast Guard, said, "With the abolition of the mandatory police system, it is a timely need to establish a new supply plan for professional personnel, and hiring high school graduates will bring vitality to the organization," adding, "We will strengthen cooperation with schools and related organizations to cultivate excellent talents in the maritime and fisheries fields and recruit Coast Guard officers."

The Coast Guard plans to finalize the career recruitment plan through this meeting and begin follow-up work such as revising related laws and regulations in the second half of this year.
