Jeonnam Governor Kim Young-rok: "Inspired by the Spirit of the Donghak Peasant Movement, We Will Build a Just Society"
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Kim Young-rok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, pledged on the 11th, marking the 127th anniversary of the Donghak Peasant Revolution National Memorial Day, to “do his best to create an ‘equal and just society’ by emulating the noble spirit of the Donghak ancestors.”
According to Jeonnam Province, Governor Kim stated in his commemorative speech that “he prays for the souls of the Donghak peasant ancestors who risked their lives to correct the wrongs of the world.”
He continued, “The Donghak Peasant Revolutionary Army rose up to save the country against the corruption and injustice of the feudal society and foreign invasions,” adding, “Although their intentions were not realized due to suppression by the Japanese and government troops, they awakened the truth that ‘Man is Heaven’ and the spirit of national independence.”
Furthermore, he explained, “The spirit of the Donghak Peasant Revolution became the root of the anti-Japanese movement and, after liberation, led to the April 19 Revolution, the May 18 Democratization Movement, and the June Struggle, forming the foundation for the development of democracy in the Republic of Korea.”
He also emphasized, “Jeonnam was one of the regions where the Donghak Peasant Revolution was most active,” highlighting that “throughout Jeonnam, including Jangseong Hwangryongchon, where a great victory was achieved, and Jangheung Seokdaedeul, the site of the final fierce battle, the spirit and energy of the Donghak Peasant Revolution remain alive.”

He added, “We will hold the Donghak Peasant Movement memorial ceremony every year to honor the souls of the ancestors and ensure that their will is passed down to future generations,” expressing “boundless respect and reverence to the Donghak heroes and the ancestors who perished without recognition.”
