Aiming to eradicate illegal parking in Child Protection Zones... 'Zero Tolerance Principle' with continuous enforcement implemented
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government announced on the 10th that starting from the 11th, fines for illegal parking and stopping violations in school zones will be increased from the current 80,000 to 90,000 KRW, which is twice the amount of general roads, to 120,000 to 130,000 KRW, which is three times the amount.
According to Seoul City, under the amended Road Traffic Act (Min-sik Law), fines for illegal parking and stopping violations in school zones will be raised from the current 80,000 KRW to 120,000 KRW for passenger cars, and from 90,000 KRW to 130,000 KRW for vans.
If a vehicle illegally parks or stops for more than two hours at the same location in a school zone, an additional fine of 10,000 KRW will be imposed, making the total fine 130,000 KRW for passenger cars and 140,000 KRW for vans.
This fine increase is part of the traffic safety enhancement measures in school zones under the ‘Min-sik Law’ implemented since March last year. It is a measure to eradicate illegal parking and stopping.
From May 11, Seoul City and each autonomous district will conduct strict enforcement with a zero-tolerance policy for 10 days from the 10th (Monday) to the 21st regarding the increased fines for parking and stopping violations.
The intensive crackdown will be carried out in 1,750 school zones by Seoul City and 25 autonomous districts, mainly focusing on school hours from 8 to 9 a.m. and from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m. during dismissal time.
From March 2 to 19, Seoul City conducted a joint zero-tolerance enforcement with the city, districts, and police for illegal parking and stopping in school zones during the new semester, issuing 13,077 fines and towing 377 vehicles.
Seoul City plans to apply a zero-tolerance policy and conduct continuous strict enforcement, including immediate towing of violating vehicles, until illegal parking and stopping are eradicated to create school zones free of traffic accidents and fatalities.
