[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyesook] Inha University has opened the first specialized research and education institution in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) in Incheon.

On the 23rd, Inha University held an opening ceremony for the 'AI Convergence Research Center' at the Jeongseok Academic Information Building on campus.

The center plans to receive a total of 4.7 billion KRW in funding from the Ministry of Science and ICT and Incheon City by next year to develop core technologies and joint technologies through industry-academia cooperation, and to establish platforms for robot cognitive intelligence, spatiotemporal analysis intelligence, and time series prediction intelligence.

Considering Incheon's industrial characteristics with its airport and port, the center will set specialized AI convergence fields and nurture AI convergence talents to serve as a hub for the dissemination of AI technology.

Accordingly, a new AI major was established within the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering in the Graduate School, and the first batch of new students was admitted in September last year. Aiming to produce master's and doctoral level experts in AI, the center plans to admit more than 50 new students annually starting this year.

The faculty currently consists of 17 members, with plans to recruit about 10 new faculty members over the next three years.

To create a future AI-based industrial structure leveraging Incheon's unique advantages, the center collaborates with 22 partner organizations including Incheon City, Incheon International Airport Corporation, Incheon Port Authority, and Incheon Namdong Smart Green Industrial Complex.

Additionally, a high-performance GPU (graphic processing unit) server has been introduced to support various industry-academia cooperation programs and AI computing environments necessary for education and research.

President Jo Myung-woo stated, "We will concentrate all university capabilities to support the success of the government's representative AI talent cultivation project."
