"Increase in Comprehensive Real Estate Tax Payers Calls for Relief" vs "Only 3-4% Subject... Need to Address Asset Inequality"
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] Public opinion was sharply divided over the easing of the comprehensive real estate tax.
On the 21st, Realmeter, a public opinion research firm, announced that in a survey commissioned by OhmyNews conducted on the 20th with 500 people nationwide aged 18 and older, the response rate for supporting the easing of the comprehensive real estate tax was 44.0%, while 38.4% opposed it.
Respondents who supported easing the tax agreed with the argument that the tax threshold has been set at 900 million KRW for 11 years, and as housing prices have risen, the number of taxpayers has increased, so easing is necessary. However, those who opposed it emphasized that only 3-4% of the population are subject to the tax and that there is no need to ease it in order to improve wealth inequality.
Those who answered "don't know" accounted for 17.7%.
By region, opinions were closely divided in Incheon·Gyeonggi (support 41.9% vs oppose 41.8%), Seoul (48.1% vs 40.2%), and Daegu·Gyeongbuk (39.8% vs 47.3%).
In Busan·Ulsan·Gyeongnam, the support rate (50.5%) was significantly higher than opposition (29.8%), while in Gwangju·Jeolla (37.3% vs 36.5%) and Daejeon·Sejong·Chungcheong (42.3% vs 32.7%), the "don't know" responses were in the 20% range, showing a higher rate than the overall average.
The distribution of opinions varied by age group. Opposition was higher than the overall average among those in their 40s and 30s, at 52.9% and 49.8% respectively, while support was dominant among those in their 50s and 60s, at 56.5% and 45.5% respectively. In their 20s, support and opposition were similar at 44.1% and 41.0%, and among those aged 70 and older, 42.9% responded "don't know," meaning about 4 out of 10 gave a reserved answer.
By ideological inclination, about 6 out of 10 conservatives (64.4%) supported easing, while about 5 out of 10 progressives (48.8%) opposed it. Among moderates, support and opposition were nearly equal at 44.4% and 43.6% respectively.
Support and opposition also split by political party affiliation. About 6 out of 10 supporters of the Democratic Party (59.8%) opposed easing, whereas about 6 out of 10 supporters of the People Power Party (63.7%) supported it. Among the non-affiliated, support and opposition were 34.0% and 42.0% respectively.
