Gwangyang City Fully Implements 'Safe Speed 5030' Policy
Urban Main Roads 50km · Residential Side Streets 30km Speed Limits
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seonsik] Gwangyang City, Jeonnam, has launched a campaign to promote the ‘Safe Speed 5030’ policy.
According to Gwangyang City on the 19th, ‘Safe Speed 5030’ is a government policy that limits speed to 50 km/h on wide arterial roads within residential, commercial, and industrial areas in urban regions, and to 30 km/h on side streets in residential areas where pedestrian safety is emphasized, in order to reduce traffic accident fatalities.
The Road Traffic Act Enforcement Rules were amended in April 2019, followed by a two-year grace period, and the policy has been fully implemented since the 17th.
To this end, the city, together with the Gwangyang Police Station, has maintained traffic safety signs and road surface markings in the downtown area, and continuously promotes the policy using the city website, SNS, electronic display boards, BIS (Bus Information System), and banners.
Park Yanggyun, head of the Transportation Department, said, “Although inconvenience to citizens is expected during the initial implementation of Safe Speed 5030, we anticipate it will help reduce traffic accident fatalities, protect citizens’ lives, and ensure safety. We ask for the active participation of all citizens so that a safe traffic culture for both pedestrians and drivers can be established.”
