The adoptive father, who is accused of neglecting the crime despite knowing about it, was sentenced to imprisonment.
The Criminal Division 13 of the Seoul Southern District Court (Chief Judge Lee Sang-joo) held a sentencing trial at 2 p.m. on charges against the adoptive mother Jang for murder and violation of the Special Act on the Punishment of Child Abuse Crimes (child abuse resulting in death), and against the adoptive father Ahn for violation of the Child Welfare Act (child abuse, etc.).
At the trial, the prosecution stated regarding the adoptive mother Jang, "Life, once lost, cannot be exchanged for anything," and added, "Any infringement on a person's life is unacceptable for any reason." They continued, "The defendant had the duty to restore the victim's health but abused the victim for a long period without any particular reason, leading to death," and "The defendant denies the crime and shows no remorse."
Along with this, the prosecution requested the court to impose a 10-year employment restriction order for child-related institutions, a 30-year electronic monitoring order, and a 5-year probation order on Jang.
Additionally, the prosecution sought a sentence of 7 years and 6 months imprisonment and a 10-year employment restriction order related to child care for the husband Ahn, who was indicted together with Jang, stating, "He was more aware than anyone of Jang's abusive acts but neglected them and took no measures to protect the victim."
