Containing Messages of Support and the Restoration of Democracy in Myanmar
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] The Suncheon City Talent Development Scholarship Foundation (Chairman Heo Seok) delivered scholarships to Myanmar international students studying in Suncheon on the 12th and comforted those who have been separated from their families in their homeland due to the recent Myanmar military coup.
On this day, officials from Suncheon City, the Suncheon City Talent Development Scholarship Foundation, and Suncheon University participated, delivering scholarships of 1 million won each to 22 Myanmar international students enrolled at Suncheon University. The event also provided an opportunity to listen to the students' difficulties and offered comfort and support for the restoration of democracy and democratization in Myanmar.
The Suncheon City Talent Development Scholarship Foundation held a regular board meeting last month and established the "International Exchange Foreign Student Scholarship" regulation to encourage the academic motivation of foreign students enrolled in local universities and to nurture talents who will serve as key bridges for international exchange.
As the first beneficiaries, it was agreed to provide scholarships to Myanmar international students currently facing difficulties due to the military coup.
Heo Seok, Mayor of Suncheon, said, "The current situation in Myanmar reminds us of the painful wounds we experienced during the harsh May 1980 uprising, and we empathize deeply." He added, "Suncheon City will spare no support to ensure that Myanmar international students, who are pursuing their passion for learning in a distant foreign country, do not give up their studies even in difficult times."
