As the prolonged COVID-19 pandemic has increased the time spent alone without meeting family or neighbors, feelings of isolation and depression have risen. In particular, the district has actively engaged in psychological quarantine measures for vulnerable groups who are likely to be in even more difficult situations.
The district plans to offer psychological stability and life vitality through safe food harvesting by cultivating gardens with the kits distributed this time.
Last year, Seongdong-gu was the first in the nation to distribute bean sprout growing kits to a total of 2,036 households, including 786 households receiving customized elderly care services and 500 single elderly households, as part of the Mind Care project, a psychological quarantine initiative for solitary elderly citizens, which received great response.
This year, the single-person garden cultivation support targets a total of 1,130 households, including 779 elderly care service recipients and 351 vulnerable middle-aged single-person households, and will be distributed through 17 neighborhood community centers and 6 welfare facilities.
In particular, for elderly care service recipients, 65 life support workers from Seongdong Senior Welfare Center and Seongdong Care Center will visit the homes of solitary elderly citizens directly to check on their well-being and deliver the kits.
Lee Jeong-hee (75), a senior citizen from Majang-dong who received a kit, said, “Due to COVID-19, I felt lethargic and frustrated staying only inside the house, but planting lettuce seeds and seeing the sprouts grow brings vitality to my home and I’m happy to have my own small garden. These small hobbies remind me of old memories and make me happy.”

Jeong Won-oh, Mayor of Seongdong-gu, said, “As social distancing continues for a long time, wearing down both body and mind, I hope that cultivating single-person gardens will bring emotional stability and peace of mind. I also hope that these small hopes and efforts will become the driving force to overcome COVID-19.”
