The Smart Green City project is a representative government Green New Deal initiative that is a regionally customized environmental improvement project integrating various environmental sectors such as climate, water, and air based on the diagnosis of urban climate and environmental issues. Through a public contest, five comprehensive leading-type and twenty problem-solving-type cities were selected.
The agreement ceremony was held in a hybrid format with both on-site and video attendance. The Ministry of Environment, Gimhae City, and 25 other Smart Green City local governments signed the business agreement and declared the vision, "Carbon neutrality of the Republic of Korea starting with Smart Green Cities, with regions taking the lead."
Mayor Heo Seong-gon, who attended on-site, recognized the need to strengthen resilience and adaptability to climate change-related risks and environmental damage, and promised the successful promotion of the Smart Green City as the starting point for the region-led implementation of carbon neutrality by 2050.
With the selection as a comprehensive leading-type Smart Green City, the city secured 10 billion KRW in national funding and will promote the "People and Nature Back to GREEN City Jinyeong" project in Jinyeong-ri and Yeorae-ri, Jinyeong-eup, from this year through next year, with a total project cost of 16.7 billion KRW.
To solve environmental problems such as odor, fine dust, and heat waves in the Jinyeong-eup area and to transition to a sustainable green city and carbon-neutral city, the city will promote the Usuji Smart Ecological Restoration Project, Smart Environmental Patrol Project, and Green Line Network Project.
Through this project, the city expects to reduce greenhouse gases, non-point pollution sources, and fine dust, as well as create 243 jobs, while solving local environmental problems.
