[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The National Information Resources Service under the Ministry of the Interior and Safety announced on the 28th that it has issued a 120.3 billion KRW-scale '1st Integrated Information Resources Project' and will actively promote its transition to an intelligent cloud service specialized agency.

The Integrated Information Resources Project is a project in which the Service secures the budget and collectively procures information resources such as servers, storage, networks, and security equipment required by government ministries.

This year, considering the timing of each ministry's need for information resources, the project will be divided and issued in two phases: the 1st phase project worth 120.3 billion KRW in March, and the 2nd phase project worth 33.9 billion KRW in May. In particular, since last year, the Service has set the vision of becoming an intelligent cloud service specialized agency and will actively expand cloud construction and transition to an intelligent cloud computing center starting this year.

The 1st phase project will introduce the necessary information resources for 209 business systems across 44 ministries including the Ministry of Strategy and Finance, and among 1,465 servers for replacement and new introduction, 1,063 units, accounting for 72.5%, will be converted to or newly built as cloud systems.

Especially, the 'SDDC-based intelligent cloud infrastructure' built last year will be expanded and applied to 33 tasks in 13 institutions including the Ministry of Employment and Labor, and GPU server infrastructure will be established to accommodate new technology-based information systems such as AI and big data in each ministry. Additionally, to foster the development of the IT industry and enable software companies to secure competitiveness, the plan is to continuously convert expensive Unix servers to general-purpose x86 servers.

Meanwhile, starting this year, the procurement system will be improved to maintain a competitive environment among IT vendors through the participation of multiple companies and to strengthen professional capabilities. By dividing projects by specialized fields such as cloud, legacy, network, and security, participation of specialized companies in each field will be encouraged, aiming not only to develop the IT industry but also to improve the quality of e-government services.

Kang Dong-seok, Director of the National Information Resources Service, said, “This year will be an important year for the Service to transition into an intelligent cloud service specialized agency,” and added, “We will support the digital government by promoting projects together with capable specialized companies.”
