This program will be conducted from April to November for 20 selected middle and high schools in Changwon, chosen through prior applications from schools, with about 3,600 youths participating.
According to the 2020 youth statistics, the number of youth (ages 9 to 24) deaths in 2018 was 2,017, with causes of death ranked as intentional harm (suicide) (9.1%), safety accidents (4.6%), and malignant neoplasms (cancer) (2.8%).
The number of youths thinking about or attempting suicide is increasing due to various and complex issues such as academics, peer relationships, and school violence.
Therefore, this program is conducted annually to help youths develop a correct understanding and attitude toward suicide issues and to strengthen resilience during psychological crises.
This youth suicide prevention education program is organized by the Masan Youth Counseling and Welfare Center and is a customized education where professional youth suicide prevention instructors visit schools directly to conduct the sessions.
Using the Korea Youth Counseling and Welfare Institute's "Fly High and Renew," the program consists of two sessions including viewing youth suicide status and video materials, rational thinking training, discovering my strength to overcome suicide, and how to ask for help.
