An official from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, "The headquarters and the Consulate General in Sendai immediately activated a response team upon the earthquake's occurrence, are maintaining close contact with the Korean community, continuously assessing the damage situation, and will provide necessary consular assistance."

According to Japanese media, the earthquake occurred off the coast of Miyagi Prefecture at around 6:09 PM on the same day, and its magnitude was revised downward from 7.2 to 6.9 on the Richter scale.
