Unveiling the Semi-Premium 'Galaxy A' Series... Will It Capture the Mid-to-Low-End Market? (Comprehensive)
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] "Awesome is for everyone!"
Samsung Electronics unveiled new models of the enhanced ‘Galaxy A’ series at its first global unpacked event targeting mid-range and budget models. Samsung Electronics appears to be fully implementing a strategy to increase the accessibility of the ‘Galaxy’ brand and expand market share by offering premium-level performance in this A series while keeping the entry barrier low with relatively affordable prices. With smartphone demand expected to recover this year, attention is focused on whether Samsung Electronics can maintain its top position in the smartphone market by redefining the standards for budget models.
On the 17th, Samsung Electronics held the 'Samsung Galaxy Awesome Unpacked' online event and introduced three Galaxy A series smartphones: the Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72. The approximately 30-minute event was broadcast live via Samsung Electronics Newsroom and YouTube. Wireless Business Division marketing team members and singer Jeon Somi introduced various features of the new products during the unpacked event.
The products unveiled feature a rear quad (4) camera system including a 64-megapixel lens, Super AMOLED display, optical image stabilization (OIS), water and dust resistance, and will be available in four colors: Awesome Violet, Awesome Blue, Awesome Black, and Awesome White.
Samsung Electronics’ unpacked event clearly indicated a strategy to aggressively target the mid-range market by enhancing the specifications of budget products. Features such as water and dust resistance and OIS, which were previously only available on flagship smartphones, have been applied to the Galaxy A series to increase the purchase incentive for mid-range models and broaden the user base.
Not Tae-moon, President of the Wireless Business Division overseeing Samsung Electronics’ smartphone business, explained, “Samsung Electronics has led the popularization of innovative technology so that more people can enjoy cutting-edge technology. The Galaxy A52, Galaxy A52 5G, and Galaxy A72 are products that demonstrate Samsung’s commitment to providing the latest innovations and powerful features that consumers want and expect to more people.”
The enhancement of mid-range products is also a strategy aimed at blocking the pursuit of Chinese companies such as Oppo and Vivo, which are seizing the opportunity to expand market share amid disruptions in Huawei’s smartphone business due to U.S. sanctions, and targeting the gap left by LG Electronics, which has effectively announced its withdrawal from the smartphone business. A Samsung Electronics official said, “We aim to maintain the No. 1 position in the global smartphone market by strengthening the competitiveness of the Galaxy A series and to expand the market share, which slightly decreased last year.”
From High-Resolution Quad Camera to 120Hz Refresh Rate... Capturing Both the Fun of Shooting and Viewing
The A series unveiled today is equipped with a quad (4) camera system including a 64-megapixel main camera, enabling clearer photos and videos than previous models. A new feature allows capturing 8-megapixel photos from 4K videos by taking screenshots.
The Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52 5G feature a quad camera setup on the rear: a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, a 5-megapixel depth camera, and a 5-megapixel macro camera, with a 32-megapixel front camera. The Galaxy A72 includes a quad camera setup with a 64-megapixel main camera, a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera, an 8-megapixel telephoto camera supporting 3x optical zoom, and a 5-megapixel macro camera on the rear, and also a 32-megapixel front camera.
The addition of optical image stabilization (OIS), previously only available on premium models, is also attractive. With the so-called 'OIS' feature, users can capture less shaky photos and videos even when filming dance videos or skateboarding scenes. Additionally, using night mode, multi-frame processing technology merges 12 images into one, enabling clear photo shooting even in low-light environments.
Another notable feature is the enhanced artificial intelligence (AI) technology. The AI-based scene optimizer automatically recognizes 30 subjects and backgrounds such as food, landscapes, and pets, and shoots with optimized settings, allowing anyone to take professional-level photos. Additionally, the ‘Fun’ mode, which allows users to create entertaining photos or video content by using various augmented reality (AR) lens effects from Snapchat directly through the main camera, is introduced for the first time. It also supports ‘AR Emoji’ and ‘My Filter’ features.
The display has also been improved. A Super AMOLED Infinity-O display is applied, with the Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A72 supporting a 90Hz refresh rate, and the Galaxy A52 5G supporting 120Hz, providing smoother scrolling of web pages and video playback. Furthermore, it supports a maximum brightness of 800 nits, the highest ever in the Galaxy A series, allowing comfortable video viewing and photo editing outdoors. The ‘Comfortable Viewing’ mode automatically adjusts the display’s color temperature according to smartphone usage patterns.
Upgraded Basic Features Including Water and Dust Resistance... Enhanced Connectivity
The A series unveiled today also features significantly improved basic performance. The mobile security platform ‘Samsung Knox’ protects users’ personal information and data in real time, and the devices support IP67-rated water and dust resistance. The Galaxy A52 and Galaxy A52 5G are equipped with 4500mAh batteries, while the Galaxy A72 has a large 5000mAh battery, with AI-based battery optimization technology applied. Additionally, a microSD card slot supporting up to 1TB capacity is included, and enhanced stereo speakers and ‘Dolby Atmos’ provide an immersive sound experience.
Connectivity with the existing Galaxy ecosystem and various devices is also smoother. Through ‘SmartThings,’ users can connect and control various devices including wearables, tablets, notebooks, and TVs starting from the new Galaxy A series, and ‘SmartThings Find’ supports locating lost devices.
Moreover, using features like ‘Music Share’ or ‘Buds Together,’ users can play their playlists on Bluetooth speakers or earphones connected to a friend’s smartphone without reconnecting via Bluetooth, and connect two ‘Galaxy Buds’ series devices to one smartphone to listen to the same music. Additionally, ‘Quick Share’ supports sharing photos or videos with nearby Galaxy devices without capacity limits, and ‘Private Share’ allows users to set who can access shared content and for how long, using blockchain technology.
The products unveiled today are scheduled to be released worldwide starting with Europe, with launch prices set at 349 euros for the Galaxy A52, 429 euros for the Galaxy A52 5G, and 449 euros for the Galaxy A72. Specifications and colors may vary by country. The domestic release and schedule are yet to be determined.
