to the World and Raising Awareness of Historical Truth
[Asia Economy, reporter Park Jongil] Seongbuk District (headed by Mayor Lee Seungro) and VANK (Voluntary Agency Network of Korea, led by Park Kitae), Korea's representative cyber diplomatic delegation, held a picket protest at 10 a.m. on March 15 in front of the Korea-China Statue of Peace located at Fountain Maru Square in Seongbuk District (Exit 2 of Hansung University Station), to raise awareness of Professor Ramseyer's historical distortion.
The protest aimed to inform 200 foreign media outlets with correspondents in Korea about the historical distortion by Mark Ramseyer, Professor at Harvard Law School. The message was delivered in both Korean and English.
According to Seongbuk District and VANK, Fountain Maru Square (Exit 2 of Hansung University Station), the protest site, is the location of the first Korea-China Statue of Peace in Korea and is surrounded by about 40 foreign embassies, making it an optimal location to inform not only foreign media but also diplomats and the public about Professor Ramseyer's historical distortion.
On February 25, Seungro Lee, Mayor of Seongbuk District, and students from Gaeseong High School held a picket protest at the same location, stating, "Restoring the honor and human rights of the victims of the Japanese military's sexual slavery is essential for a peaceful world! We demand the retraction of Professor Ramseyer's paper, which denies Japan's history of aggression and perpetration!" to condemn the controversial statements in Professor Ramseyer's publication.
This event was covered by international media such as CNN (USA), The Guardian and The Independent and Daily Mail (UK), and AP News, raising global awareness of Japan's historical distortion.
Since 1999, VANK has been at the forefront of raising awareness of historical distortion among netizens worldwide, and recently, it has focused on highlighting the problems in Professor Ramseyer's paper distorting the issue of Japanese military "comfort women."
VANK has already led a global petition with 30,000 signatures and is sharing posters and other materials through social networking services (SNS).
The joint picket protest against Professor Ramseyer's historical distortion on March 15 was organized after VANK proposed cooperation to Seongbuk District, which has been continuously engaging in various activities to correct Japan's historical distortion, with the participation of the administration, future generations, and local residents.
Seongbuk District and VANK agreed that now, as numerous international media are covering the problems with Professor Ramseyer's claim that the Japanese military "comfort women" were voluntary prostitutes, it is the right time to inform the world of Japan's historical distortion and bring it to the global stage.
The picket protest by Seongbuk District and VANK was delivered to 20 major media outlets in the Americas and Europe, including The New York Times, The Washington Post, USA Today, and The Wall Street Journal.
Lee Seungro, Mayor of Seongbuk District, stated, "Seongbuk District is a region where many independence activists, including Manhae Han Yongun, lived or were active, and the efforts to promote correct history and encourage participation have continued across generations. I believe that by raising awareness of Professor Ramseyer's historical distortion to the world in front of the Korea-China Statue of Peace, located at Fountain Maru Square-a crossroads frequented by people from various generations and cultures-Seongbuk District, our future generations, and VANK will be able to more effectively pressure Japan, which denies historical facts, and further promote the restoration of honor for the victims of the Japanese military 'comfort women,' as well as the values of peace and human rights."
