"AI at Construction Sites" LG Uplus and GS Construction Demonstrate 'Smart Construction'... Commercialization Within the Year
[Asia Economy Reporter Joselgina] LG Uplus, together with GS Construction, has successfully verified smart construction technology that applies artificial intelligence (AI) and wireless communication infrastructure to construction sites. They plan to commercialize it within this year.
According to LG Uplus on the 11th, since November last year, the company selected GS Construction’s ‘Seocho Grangjai’ construction site located in Seocho-dong, Seocho-gu, Seoul, as a pilot site and demonstrated ▲construction site specialized wireless communication ▲real-time worker location tracking ▲AI video analysis-based safety management system ▲tower crane safety solution ▲Internet of Things (IoT) helmets.
Through this, the two companies operated a 24-hour accident prevention system at the construction site and confirmed that it can improve worker safety.
In particular, the ‘RTLS (Real Time Location System)’ that can check workers’ locations in real time can identify the worker’s position down to the building, floor, and unit number. Also, by using AI technology and wireless communication infrastructure, CCTV cameras are installed throughout the construction site, and AI analyzes the status and movements of workers and the movement of heavy equipment by recognizing people and objects from the footage captured by the CCTV.
A solution to ensure safety for tower crane operations, which have a high risk in case of accidents, was also introduced. The crane’s movements are detected by sensors to check collision prediction distances, and in case of collision risk, real-time automatic alerts are sent via wireless communication to warn and prevent tower crane collisions. The workload can also be calculated based on the weight and frequency of operations, enhancing operational efficiency through data analysis.
Additionally, the ‘IoT helmet,’ which allows quick understanding of site conditions in CCTV blind spots and emergency situations, enables real-time monitoring through cameras and walkie-talkies mounted on workers’ helmets, allowing prompt response to situations.
Based on this technology verification, LG Uplus plans to prepare for commercialization within this year to introduce smart construction solutions for safety and productivity improvement at various construction sites in the future.
Seunghoon Jeon, Senior Vice President of New Business Development at LG Uplus, said, “We will continuously strive to meet customer needs who want safer construction sites in response to environmental changes such as legal and institutional changes and ESG management by preparing smart construction safety solutions using ICT technologies such as 5G and AI.”
