District Mayor Yu Deok-yeol Delivers Bread and Roses to Female Employees on International Women's Day, Expressing Respect and Gratitude... Continues Efforts for a Society with Increased Economic and Social Participation Opportunities for Women
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Dongdaemun-gu (Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol) delivered bread and roses to female employees in celebration of International Women's Day.
Dongdaemun-gu organized this event to commemorate International Women's Day in order to promote a culture of gender equality, express respect and gratitude to female employees, and support flower farms struggling due to the impact of COVID-19.
On the 8th at 11:30 a.m., Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol encouraged female employees by handing them bread and roses at the basement first floor cafeteria of the district office.
Afterwards, Mayor Yoo visited the Dongdaemun-gu Public Health Center's screening clinic and presented roses to female medical staff, paying tribute to their dedication and hard work.
Mayor Yoo Deok-yeol stated, “We must create a society where no one is discriminated against or marginalized because they are women. We will do our best to build a women-friendly city where women's economic activities and social participation opportunities increase, and ultimately where all residents are happy.”
International Women's Day was established to commemorate March 8, 1908, when over 15,000 female workers in the United States protested demanding political equality, the right to form labor unions, and wage increases.

The slogan chanted by American female workers during the street march 113 years ago was "Give us bread and roses." Bread symbolized the survival rights of female workers, and roses represented suffrage, which had been granted only to men.
