Jeonnam National University Researchers Develop 'All-Solid-State Battery' to Prevent Electric Vehicle Fires
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Gwan-woo] Researchers at Chonnam National University have succeeded in developing a battery that can significantly reduce the fire risk of electric vehicles.
On the 7th, according to Chonnam National University, Professor Park Chan-jin's research team from the Department of Advanced Materials Engineering succeeded in developing an all-solid-state battery that overcomes the weaknesses of solid electrolytes, which are key components of all-solid-state batteries, such as low ion conductivity, unstable contact with electrodes, and mechanical property issues.
All-solid-state batteries, whose constituent materials are all solid substances, are chemically stable and thus safe from fire, while also offering superior performance compared to conventional lithium-ion batteries, attracting significant attention in the fields of electric vehicles and batteries.
For this reason, research on all-solid-state batteries has been actively conducted domestically and internationally, but the Chonnam National University research team solved the problem of overcoming the weaknesses of solid electrolytes, which are key components.
Until now, lithium-ion batteries mainly used in electric vehicles employed organic liquid electrolytes, which are highly flammable and have been identified as a major cause of battery fires.
This research was conducted with support from the Ministry of Science and ICT (Korea Research Foundation Leading Research Center) and the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Korea Energy Technology Evaluation Institute ESS Technology Development Project), among others.
