The underground utility project, a key initiative of the 7th elected administration, is a mid- to long-term plan established by the district to create a pleasant and safe walking environment by burying utility lines underground to improve the cityscape.
With a project budget of 74 billion KRW (29.8 billion KRW from the district), this project is the largest of its kind nationwide, being carried out sequentially across 13 sections totaling 13.9 km. Currently, the district’s underground utility rate is 77.1%, which is 18 percentage points higher than the average of 59.1% among Seoul’s 25 autonomous districts.
In June, the district will fully commence underground utility construction at two locations: ▲ Dogok-ro Section 4 (Severance Intersection to Hanti Station Intersection) and ▲ Nonhyeon-ro Section 1 (Eulji Hospital Intersection to Hakdong Station Intersection).
In the second half of the year, construction will begin at three locations: ▲ the area around Gugak Middle and High School ▲ the pedestrian axis maintenance area near Seonjeongneung ▲ Nonhyeon-ro Section 2 (Eulji Hospital Intersection to Apgujeong Station).
Last year, the district completed construction in three sections: ▲ Bamgogae-ro in Segok-dong ▲ near Apgujeong Rodeo Station ▲ Yeongdong-daero 112-gil.
Currently, the conduit construction by Korea Electric Power Corporation and telecommunications companies has been completed at ▲ the south side of Yeoksam-ro Tech City ▲ Dogok-ro Section 1 (Eunma Apartment Entrance Intersection to Daechi Woosung Apartment Intersection) ▲ Dogok-ro Section 2 (Baengbaeng Intersection to Dogok 1-dong Community Service Center Intersection), and the utility pole removal work is scheduled to be completed by June.
Meanwhile, alongside the underground utility construction, the district plans to simultaneously implement eight projects including road paving, sewer pipe improvements, streetlight replacement, installation of security CCTV, street tree maintenance, and public Wi-Fi installation to transform Garosu-gil into a “walkable and desirable street.”
