The ceremony, conducted in compliance with COVID-19 social distancing and quarantine guidelines, was attended by about 70 people including families of independence patriots, veterans, and veterans' organizations, and was simultaneously broadcast live through Guri City's official YouTube channel, Happy GTV.
The commemoration included ▲reading of the Declaration of Independence by Ham Cheon-woo, representative of the families of independence patriots ▲commemorative speech by An Seung-nam, mayor of Guri City ▲presentation of flower bouquets to families of independence patriots ▲and three cheers of "Manse" led by An Young-gi, director of the Guri Cultural Center, remembering the noble spirit of the patriotic martyrs and the great history of our nation's resistance.
In his commemorative speech, Mayor An Seung-nam said, "We must remember Yoon Hee-soon, born in Guri City, the first female independence militia leader in Joseon, who left the famous words, 'Although I am a woman, there can be no distinction between men and women when saving the country.'" He added, "I repeatedly express my respect and gratitude to the patriotic martyrs who devoted themselves for liberation and to the families of independence patriots."
In particular, Mayor An emphasized, "Although Japan's sovereignty invasion has ended, recently China's 'Northeast Project,' which attempts to claim Goguryeo history as Chinese history, is now expanding into the cultural domain," and stressed the need to be vigilant against China's moves to appropriate and invade Korean culture.
