Even Toys Are Gender-Neutral... Mr. Potato Head Changes Name
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] The American character "Mr. Potato Head," featured in the movie "Toy Story," has changed its name to "Potato Head."
On the 25th (local time), according to The New York Times and others, toy company Hasbro announced in a statement that "to make Potato Head welcoming to everyone in the world, we are removing 'Mr.' from the product name and logo," adding that "this will promote gender equality and inclusion."
Mr. Potato Head, released in 1952, is a toy with a potato-shaped body whose eyes, nose, mouth, mustache, glasses, hat, ears, and more can be changed in various ways. It was the first toy to be advertised on TV.
The reason Mr. Potato Head changed its name after 70 years is explained as an effort to adapt to modern society, where diversity is valued. A Hasbro official stated, "'Mr.' limits gender identity and family composition."

Barbie doll manufacturer Mattel also released a gender-neutral doll in 2019. This assembly-type product allows selection of race from six skin tones as well as head and clothing. With options including long hair and miniskirts, as well as short hair, sportswear, and jeans, it is difficult to guess the gender based on assembly.
