[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Seon-gang] The amendment to the Special Act on the Creation of the Asia Culture Center City (hereinafter referred to as the Asia Special Act) passed the National Assembly Legislation and Judiciary Committee on the 26th and was approved in the plenary session, prompting Gwangju Mayor Lee Yong-seop to issue a statement welcoming the development.
In his statement, Mayor Lee said, “I sincerely thank the members of the Democratic Party of Korea and the People Power Party who responded to the earnest desire of 1.5 million Gwangju citizens hoping for the normalization of the National Asia Culture Center and the successful promotion of the Asia Culture Center City project,” adding, “Although there were several critical moments, I deeply appreciate the efforts of the local political circles, civil society organizations, and cultural artists who did not give up until the end and united with one voice.”
He continued, “Where there is a will, there is a way. The amendment to the Asia Special Act will serve as a driving force to strengthen the role and status of the Culture Center and secure the competitiveness of Gwangju as the Asia Culture Center City,” emphasizing, “It will be a catalyst to accelerate national balanced development and local decentralization.”
