"Passage of the Special Act on Asia Culture Center City Amendment in the National Assembly Requires Cooperation from the People Power Party"
Democratic Party Gwangju City and Jeonnam Provincial Party Joint Statement Released
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Democratic Party of Korea's Gwangju Metropolitan City Party and Jeonnam Provincial Party have urged the People Power Party to provide proactive support for the passage of the amendment to the "Special Act on the Asia Culture Centered City" within the current National Assembly session.
On the 25th, the Democratic Party's Gwangju and Jeonnam parties stated in a joint press release, "The People Power Party declared in October that Gwangju would be their second electoral district," and added, "We ask the People Power Party to actively cooperate in passing the amendment to the 'Special Act on the Asia Culture Centered City' within this session of the National Assembly to normalize the operation of the Asia Culture Center, a long-standing wish of Gwangju citizens."
They explained that if the amendment is not passed within this session, there is a risk that public projects such as national balanced development, fostering cooperation and exchange among Asian countries, creating new cultures, and the creation and production of cultural content will become difficult.
The Democratic Party's Gwangju and Jeonnam parties emphasized, "The National Asia Culture Center is a complex cultural institution established with the grand vision of achieving balanced national development, generating national wealth through culture, and promoting exchange, research, and creation of Asian cultural resources to foster mutual growth among Asian countries. However, even before its opening in 2015, the Special Act on the Asia Culture Centered City was amended to entrust the operation of the Asia Culture Center to 'related corporations or organizations,' which caused many operational obstacles."

They continued, "To correct this, 18 members of the National Assembly, including Representative Lee Byung-hoon, proposed an amendment to the Special Act on the Asia Culture Centered City on August 12, 2020," and asserted, "If this law is not enacted within the current session, the National Asia Culture Center will lose its status as a national institution under the current law amended in 2015, and it will inevitably face a crisis in fulfilling its original public functions such as national balanced development, exchange among Asian countries, creation of new cultures, and the creation and production of cultural content."
