[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Dong-hoon] The police are set to reopen the investigation into allegations of fraud and other charges against the mother-in-law of Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-yeol.
According to the police on the 24th, the Anti-Corruption and Public Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency received a request for supplementary investigation from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office on the 8th of last month regarding the allegations of forgery of private documents, fraud, and embezzlement against Yoon's mother-in-law, Choi Mo (75), and is currently reviewing the case.
The police began investigating after receiving a complaint against Choi in January last year and transferred the case in December of the same year with a non-prosecution (dismissal) opinion. At that time, the Intellectual Crime Investigation Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency, which handled the investigation, explained the dismissal by stating that "the charges (forgery of private documents) against Choi and the police investigation findings were the same." However, the prosecution requested a supplementary investigation into all the charges against Choi that had been transferred.
