Jungnang-gu, Making School Routes Safer for Children with Full Effort
Recruiting 17 'Children Traffic Safety Instructors' as Safe School Commuting Helpers from 15th to 19th... Creating Safe School Routes with LED Sign Replacement and Yellow Carpet Installation in Child Protection Zones
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Jungnang-gu (Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi) is making every effort to create safe school routes with the goal of ZERO traffic accidents in children protection zones.
The district is recruiting 17 'Children Traffic Safety Instructors' who help ensure the safe return of elementary school students by the 19th.
The application period is from the 15th to the 19th, and applicants can apply by visiting the Traffic Administration Division of Jungnang-gu Office. Final successful candidates will be selected on the 23rd.
The working period is from March until the end of this year. Working hours and days will be flexibly operated depending on school conditions.
The Children Traffic Safety Instructor is part of the district’s major safety and traffic project, the ‘Creating Safe School Routes’ initiative. The traffic safety instructors gather students heading in the same direction at dismissal time and accompany them safely to their destinations such as home or academies, acting as safe school return helpers.
The working hours are about 1 hour and 40 minutes daily, and according to Seoul’s living wage standard, they will receive an hourly wage of 17,123 KRW. The working locations include seven elementary schools in the area: Myeondong Elementary, Myeonil Elementary, Sinnae Elementary, Sinhyeon Elementary, Jungnang Elementary, Jungmok Elementary, and Junghwa Elementary.
In addition, the district is carrying out various projects to create ‘Safe School Routes.’ First, by last year, 20 yellow carpets were installed at crosswalks around schools to prevent accidents, and all 378 children protection zone signs were replaced with LED signs for better visibility.
Furthermore, 11 speed enforcement cameras and 15 illegal parking enforcement cameras were installed in safety-vulnerable areas to strengthen school route safety. As a result of these efforts, last year Jungnang-gu achieved ZERO child traffic accident fatalities within children protection zones.
Not stopping at basic safety facility installations, efforts were also made to create a pleasant school commuting environment. By installing starlight graphics and lighting, the ‘Star Candy Road’ at Dongwon Elementary shines brightly even at night, and the pedestrian-priority road at Sinhyeon Elementary was transformed by blocking vehicle entry, creating a resting and play space for children. These distinctive pedestrian paths have greatly increased satisfaction not only among children but also residents around the schools.
This year, to ensure children can safely wait for signals, ‘Yellow Footprints’ will be installed in front of waiting lines at major crosswalks on school routes, and the zones with speed limits lowered to 20 km/h will be expanded, further enhancing pedestrian safety on school routes.
