Mother Who Left 7-Year-Old Daughter Alone to Meet Lover... Referred for Prosecution
Abuse and Neglect Allegations... Police Also Conduct Separate Investigation into Lover's Molestation Charges
[Asia Economy Reporter Yoo Byung-don] A mother who repeatedly neglected her 7-year-old child by leaving her alone to visit her lover in another province was caught by the police.
On the 10th, the Gwanak Police Station in Seoul announced that they investigated A (50) on charges of emotionally and economically abusing and neglecting her daughter (violation of the Child Welfare Act) and sent her to the prosecution with a recommendation for indictment.
According to the police, from September to December last year, A is accused of emotionally abusing her daughter (7), who was in the first grade of elementary school, and neglecting her by leaving the child alone at home for several days while she went to meet her lover in another region.
Police investigations revealed that A, a basic livelihood security recipient receiving about 1 million won per month, neglected her young daughter economically by sending about half of the money to other children living in China.
At the end of August last year, A herself reported to the police that "my lover sexually assaulted my daughter," but she did not respond to requests for witness investigations, causing difficulties in the initial police investigation.
About a month later, in September, a person close to the daughter who heard about the assault reported again to the police, saying, "The child was sexually assaulted by A's lover."
In December of the same year, a report suspecting neglect was received, stating that "A left her daughter alone and went on a trip," which led to the start of a police investigation into A.
The police, after investigating A and her daughter separately, found the charges to be valid and took temporary separation measures last month to prevent A from approaching her daughter while continuing the investigation.
During the police investigation, A admitted most of the charges but stated that she is no longer in a relationship with her lover.
