Punitive Damages Applied to Media Companies, 6 out of 10 People "Support" [Realmeter]
[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] A public opinion survey revealed that six out of ten people support including the media in the punitive damages system.
According to Realmeter's survey commissioned by OhmyNews on the 9th, targeting 500 men and women nationwide aged 18 and older, 61.8% responded that they "support" the application of the punitive damages system to media companies (40.6% strongly support, 21.2% somewhat support). Those who "oppose" accounted for 29.4% (12.5% strongly oppose, 16.9% somewhat oppose), and 8.8% answered "don't know."
By region, all areas except Daegu and Gyeongbuk showed a higher ratio of support compared to opposition. In particular, 85.8% in Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungcheong expressed support, the highest rate, followed by Gwangju and Jeolla (77.2%), Busan, Ulsan, and Gyeongnam (58.7%), Seoul (58.6%), and Incheon and Gyeonggi (57.4%). In Daegu and Gyeongbuk, support and opposition were evenly split at 45.5% and 45.6%, respectively.
Support was dominant across all age groups. The support rate exceeded 60% for those in their 30s to 50s (30s 67.9%, 40s 69.3%, 50s 65.3%), with particularly strong active support in the 40s age group, where 55.7% responded "strongly support" and 13.7% "somewhat support," higher than the average.
Opinions were divided by ideological inclination. About 8 out of 10 progressives (79.1%) responded that they "support," while conservatives were split with 50.7% support and 45.5% opposition.
By political party support, 86.6% of Democratic Party supporters said they "support," whereas only 42.0% of People Power Party supporters did.
