Jeju Island Implements 'Gwangyeok Altteul Transportation Card' to Reduce Public Transportation Costs
Jeju Residents Receive 30% Transportation Cost Reduction Benefit... Promoting Public Transportation 활성화
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters (Jeju) Reporter Park Chang-won] Jeju Special Self-Governing Province announced that it will officially implement the ‘Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card Project’ from the 1st of this month to alleviate the transportation cost burden on Jeju residents using public transportation this year.
The Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card Project is promoted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport as a government national agenda, aiming to reduce the transportation cost burden for residents who regularly use public transportation.
This project supports mileage proportional to eco-friendly travel distances (walking and cycling) when using the bus with the Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card, allowing discounts of up to 30% on transportation costs.
Any resident aged 19 or older with an address in Jeju can apply, and the card can be issued through the Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card website.
The Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card can be used by installing the ‘Metropolitan Discount Transportation Card Mileage’ app on a smartphone, registering the card, and then using it.
When using public transportation, users click the start button on the app when leaving home and the arrival button upon reaching their destination; the app calculates the travel distance by bus and accumulates mileage accordingly.
Accordingly, the province provides about 20% of the transportation cost as mileage, and the card company supports an additional 10% discount based on usage performance, offering residents up to a 30% reduction in transportation costs.
To encourage public transportation use, mileage is only supported when using public transportation 15 times or more per month, with a maximum accumulation of up to 44 times per month.
When using intercity and branch line buses within the province, mileage of 250 KRW per trip is accumulated based on a travel distance of 800 meters, providing mileage up to a monthly limit of 11,000 KRW for 44 trips.
The mileage accumulated each month is either discounted on the bill or refunded according to each card.
Additionally, low-income youth (aged 19?34) can receive extra mileage upon submission of supporting documents, and during fine dust emergency reduction measures, mileage is doubled to encourage reduced use of private cars.
