Changwon City Partners with Research Institutes to Transfer Innovative Technologies to SMEs
[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Park Saeyan] Research institutes and universities in Changwon, Gyeongnam Province, are transferring innovative technologies to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).
Recently, Changwon City signed a business agreement for innovative institution technology transfer with Changwon National University, Gyeongnam National University, Korea Institute of Materials Science, Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, Gyeongnam Technopark, and Changwon Industry Promotion Agency.
The participating institutions will transfer innovative technologies developed through their own research and development to SMEs to help commercialize them.
Changwon City and the participating institutions have set a goal to transfer technology to 100 SMEs by 2023.
This year, each participating institution will compile their research achievements into a database. Changwon City will support 70% of the technology transfer fees for SMEs, up to a maximum of 15 million KRW.
Mayor Heo Seong-mu of Changwon said, "We are fully committed to achieving an economic V-turn this year to break the trend of economic decline, and industrial technology is the core and vigorous driving force of the economic V-turn," adding, "We will actively promote the commercialization of new technologies and the creation of a culture that respects engineers."
He also stated, "We will build and vigorously support a technology transfer ecosystem so that companies can more easily access new technologies developed with great care by universities and research institutes, thereby creating significant added value."

Meanwhile, last year, with the promotion and launch of the Korea Institute of Materials Science, Changwon now hosts two main government-funded research institutes, including the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute. With 116 innovative institutions supporting technology development and commercialization for research institutes, universities, affiliated organizations, and companies, Changwon boasts the highest concentration of innovative institutions among basic local governments nationwide.
