When the project is completed around the end of the year, the number of parking spaces at the KTX Singyeongju Station public parking lot will increase from the existing 230 spaces to around 680 spaces.
According to Gyeongju City, apart from the 357-space parking lot operated by Korail Networks, a public parking lot with a total of 230 spaces has been operated near the Singyeongju Station plaza since November 2012 to alleviate parking difficulties near the station.
However, due to the increase in KTX Singyeongju Station users, the parking lot is insufficient, causing great inconvenience to users, making the additional creation of parking lots urgent.
Before the COVID-19 situation, the average daily number of users in 2019, including SRT, was 5,786 and has been increasing every year. In 2017, it was 4,940, and in 2018, 5,162.
Due to these circumstances, on the side roads around KTX Singyeongju Station and the access roads to nearby villages, approximately dozens of illegally parked vehicles on weekdays and about 100 on weekends cause great inconvenience not only to users but also to residents.
A Gyeongju City official explained, "The newly expanded public parking lot will prioritize accessibility to Singyeongju Station, and an additional passage directly connecting to the existing station plaza will be created. Considering that the entrance and exit of the existing public parking lot were far from the intersection, causing inconvenience to users, a new entrance and exit will be made closer to the intersection."
Meanwhile, the usage fee for the public parking lot, which will be managed by the Gyeongju City Facilities Management Corporation, is much cheaper than the existing Korail-operated parking lot.
