Samsung Electronics Obtains International Security Certification for 5G Mobile Communication Equipment
[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] Samsung Electronics has obtained the international Common Criteria (CC) certification for its 5G mobile communication equipment.
The CC certification is an ISO 15408 international standard that evaluates the security of IT products. It can be obtained by verifying compliance with common evaluation criteria managed by various countries around the world.
Samsung Electronics began reviewing the security of its 5G mobile communication base stations in January last year with Canadian security evaluation company Lightship and completed the review in November. The product was then registered as a security product on the international CC portal. Additionally, this month, Samsung became the first in the industry to list its 5G mobile communication base stations on the Product Compliant List (PCL), a security certification product managed by the U.S. National Security Agency (NSA) under the National Information Assurance Partnership (NIAP), and also appeared on the Certified Product (CP) list of the Communications Security Establishment (CSE) under the Canadian Department of National Defence.
The United States and Canada operate their own information security systems alongside the international CC certification, conducting additional security verification and certification steps. Samsung Electronics pursued CC certification to enhance product reliability as its business expands in various directions, including supplying 5G commercial networks in the North American region.
Last year, Samsung Electronics signed a large-scale 5G commercial supply contract with Verizon, the world's largest mobile carrier, and was selected as a telecommunications equipment supplier for the U.S. Department of Defense's 5G technology verification. It is also continuously expanding its 5G mobile communication business in North America by entering 4G and 5G commercial businesses with Canadian companies TELUS and Videotron.
