Pro-China Hong Kong Politician Secretly Travels to China for COVID-19 Vaccination
[Asia Economy Reporter Cho Hyun-ui] About 200 pro-China politicians from Hong Kong are traveling to China to receive the COVID-19 vaccine.
According to the South China Morning Post (SCMP) on the 21st, they will receive their first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine developed by the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinopharm in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, China, which borders Hong Kong, on the 22nd. They plan to return in early next month for their second dose.
SCMP explained that some politicians are getting vaccinated in China to prevent COVID-19 infection ahead of their attendance at the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference and the National People's Congress in March.
To prevent further spread at gatherings of key politicians from China and Hong Kong, 140 of the approximately 200 people traveling to Shenzhen underwent COVID-19 testing the day before.

However, SCMP reported that their vaccinations are being conducted secretly. Since vaccinations in Hong Kong are scheduled to begin in mid-next month, there are concerns about public backlash over politicians receiving the vaccine before the general public.
