View original image[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Nahum] A public opinion poll showed that Lee Jae-myung, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, ranked first in the preference survey for the next presidential candidate.
Korea Gallup announced on the 15th that in a survey conducted from the 12th to the 14th among 1,000 people nationwide aged 18 and older, when asked who they thought would be a good political leader to lead Korea, i.e., the next presidential candidate, 23% of respondents answered Governor Lee, the highest percentage.
Following him were Prosecutor General Yoon Seok-youl with 13% and Lee Nak-yeon, leader of the Democratic Party, with 10%, ranking second and third respectively.
Compared to the survey conducted a month ago, preference for Governor Lee increased by 3 percentage points, while preference for Leader Lee dropped sharply by 6 percentage points.
Within the Democratic Party support base, preference for Governor Lee was 43%, significantly ahead of Leader Lee at 23%.
In Gwangju and Jeolla, Leader Lee’s stronghold, preference for Governor Lee (28%) was also higher than for Leader Lee (21%).
Others included Ahn Cheol-soo, leader of the People’s Party, at 3%, Hong Joon-pyo, independent lawmaker, at 3%, and former lawmaker Yoo Seung-min at 1%.
Meanwhile, President Moon Jae-in’s approval rating for his administration remained at 38%, the same level as the previous week. Negative evaluations dropped by 2 percentage points to 53%.
Party support ratings were 34% for the Democratic Party, 23% for the People Power Party, and 5% each for the Justice Party and the People’s Party.

This survey contacted 6,528 voters aged 18 and older nationwide, with a final 1,000 respondents completing the survey, recording a 15% response rate.
